Academic research

Our research activities are focused on developing models, methods and tools for optimizing business processes and enterprise IT to ensure effective alignment of IT with business in order to improve competitiveness of organizations.

Resulting methodologies and tools enable to accurately define, measure and manage the desired effects of ICT, and to make informed decisions about investment in ICT, focusing on key projects that have the potential to improve the performance and quality of management of ICT, and at the same time to reduce the cost of development and operation of information systems.

Research Outcomes:

  • Causal models of  relationships between economic and ICT indicators in organizations which  enable measurement of ICT benefits and return on investment in ICT projects,
  • Models, methodologies and software tools for planning and management of IT services

This research is mainly based on the theory and practice of information management, exact models and systems of metrics, with emphasis on integrated systems approaches and ICT services

Research is carried out by academics and PhD students, and is supported by grants from funding agencies and leading Czech and international companies.

Research Projects (in Progress)

P403/10/0303 – Advanced Principles and Models for Enterprise ICT Management.

Provider: GA0 – Grant Agency of the Czech Republic (GA CR). Principal investigator: Prof. Ing. Jiří Voříšek, CSc., Research years: 2010-2012 Abstract: The main objective of this project is to address the research issues showed below and to incorporate the outcomes into Enterprise ICT Management Model (developed during the project GACR 201_06_0175). This objective will be achieved using the results of an exhaustive survey of different types of enterprises in the Czech Republic. The issues identified:

  • How and under what conditions can ICT help the enterprise to effectively react to adverse economic
  • situation?
  • What are opportunities for innovation of business models and architectures that result from recent
  • technological developments?
  • What is the impact of increasing availability of externally sourced ICT services on existing enterprise
  • models and architectures?
  • How does ICT impact on different types of organizations (i.e. large corporation, SMEs, etc.), and how
  • should this be reflected in the methodologies used for enterprise ICT management?
  • What is the impact of different types of ICT architectures on the effectiveness of enterprise ICT and the
  • business performance of the organization?
  • What changes are currently taking place in the skills profile of ICT professionals?
  • What is the impact of the availability of ICT professionals on the models for ICT service delivery?

P403-10-0303 – Enterprise Architecture as Management Principle for SMEs.

Provider: GA0 – Grant Agency of the Czech Republic (GA CR). Principal investigator: Prof. Ing. Jaroslav Jandoš, CSc., Research years: 2010-2012 Abstract: “Although a wide range of EA topics is covered, the EA discipline is lacking basic research. We can conclude the immaturity of the discipline. Immature disciplines rely on basic research in order to progress. Given this lack, the increased attention from academic world would be beneficial” Kerstin Langenberg and Alain Wegmann. EA discipline has advanced not only through theoretical research, but also in practical application of EA in organizations. So far, EA has been implemented mainly in large organizations. However, it can be argued that EA it is equally important to SMEs. This is particularly true given the current economic downturn; the benefits of EA should be also available to SMEs, given their importance to the economy as a whole. Consolidation of EA concepts and enabling EA as an instrument for management in enterprises in general, and in SMEs in particular are the main objectives of this project.
